Discharge Today?

Kiera went back to the hospital on Tuesday for another check in after a weekend pass. On Tuesday morning the doctors wanted to start her on a medication to reduce the amount of insulin in her blood. The medication took until Wednesday Morning to get to the ward so Brenda and Kiera lost another day just waiting in the hospital. Brenda is not a happy camper this morning and is lobbying hard to go home today.

Over the past week we have been adjusting the amount of corn starch we add to her feeds and we have it at 13 ml per feeding right now. At this level of corn starch she no longer has high blood sugar readings one hour after feeds and her lows are staying above 2.0 but they would like the lows to stay above 3. That is why they are trying the insulin reducing medications.

The endocrinologist is a bit confused with Kiera. She has high insulin levels which mean she should always have low blood sugar levels, however when she fasts through the night she has normal blood sugar levels in the morning.

We are wanting Kiera to be home until next week Thursday so that we can have a normal week before she has her fundoplication on Friday July 16 and has to be in hospital for at least another 5 days. They will need to adjust the doses of corn starch and other medication at that time anyway because the fundoplication may change her dumping syndrome.
