Philadelphia bound?

The doctors here in Manitoba are puzzled by Kiera's hypoglycemia and her discomfort during feeding.  One doctor made the suggestion to me yesterday that she feels defeated and believes that Kiera should be sent to see Dr. Charles Stanley at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.  He is an expert in the area of hypoglycemia and should be able to solve Kiera's problem.  The problem right now is that this expert is on holiday and so Kiera would not be sent to Philadelphia for another week.  In the meantime, Kiera is getting four shots a day of octreotide, a powerful drug that mimics hormone function.  If it works to raise Kiera's blood glucose levels, then it should also help with Kiera's dumping symptoms.  The problem is that this drug raises overall blood glucose levels and Kiera does not have a blood sugar problem after or during fasting but only after feeding.  The doctors here want to raise Kiera's dose of octreotide at the end of the day to see if that would make a difference.  She would be on that dose for a couple of days and she would be monitored.  If there is still no change, they would give her the top dose for her age and weight.  This experimenting could take at least a week so Kiera would not be sent to Philadelphia until a week from Monday at the earliest.  The octreotide working, however, still does not get to the root of Kiera's after feeding low blood sugars so it would still be in Kiera's best interest to be examined and treated by a world expert in hypoglycemia.
