On Wednesday Kiera had an appointment to see her surgeon. The surgeon reminded us that she had expected Kiera to have gastric reflux because of a possible stricture (a narrowing of the esophagus) at the site where the proximal (top) and distal (bottom) part of Kiera's esophagus were reconnected. This fact, along with the thrush and her common cold, could be why Kiera does not want to drink. The NG tube allows formula to go directly to her stomach, by passing the site that is possibly causing her some discomfort.
Wednesday was also the day that Kiera got a new NG tube. She now has one that is changed every 30 days instead of every 7 days. The tube is much different in that it is softer and we have noticed that her cries are louder and she seems much more comfortable. We are hoping that this new tube will allow Kiera to feed better as well. It's been about 3 weeks now that Kiera has not taken anything in orally -- today we will be trying to get her on the bottle once more. Her cold is winding down and her thrush is gone (hopefully).
Kiera will have the new NG tube in for 6 weeks. At that time if she is still not consuming enough to be 100% tube free, surgery will be scheduled for her to have a G-tube put in.

Wow. That's a lot of information to take in at one appointment. Hopefully with the thrush and cold leaving her system she will be able to get back on track with oral feeding.
